Palaikastro is situated at the most eastern part of Crete, about 19km away from Sitia and 7km away from the famous palm forest Vai. It is the biggest village of all the area of Sitia, with about 1300 permanent residents. It is conveniently located and gives access to the natural, historical and archaeological interest of the area. The semi-tropical climate offers mild, sunny winters and exotic warm summers which are never too hot because they are moderated by a cooling summer breeze called Meltemi. Location
Kouremenos beach. A long sandy beach near Kastri Hill. The sea is ideal for windsurfing and one of the best in Europe. Along the beach, there are apartments to rent, restaurants and a small fishing harbour.
Apart from the perfect swimming conditions for young and old and the “air conditioning effect” which has been enjoyed by many visitors to the area, the bay offers perfect, flat-water conditions close to the shore (due to the off-shore wind) as well as clear blue waters and is the perfect spot for those wishing to learn how to windsurf, but also for those who even though advanced, want to either practice or learn new surf moves.
For those interested, there are 2 windsurf stations on Kouremenos Beach (the only fully equipped ones on Crete), with teams of instructors to teach, equip or just instruct on new freestyle moves.
The main access to the beach is from the road which reaches to the small port but there are other trail routes which connect Kouremenos and Chiona beach. Trails that pass by olive trees and other yards, alternative trails, that are appropriate for those who want to enjoy the nature and quietness of the scenery. We strongly suggest you to choose and discover the trail that connects Kastri Hill Suites with Kouremenos Beach.
Chiona Beach is situated only 200 square meters from Kastri Hill. It can be easily characterized as a wonder of nature, with its crystal-clear waters, pristine shore, and greenery. Home to many migratory birds, Chiona is a secluded beach where one can enjoy moments of privacy under the beautiful Mediterranean sky.
Small, yet full of natural beauty, it will captivate you with its marvelous view. The beach is sandy with shallow waters, suitable for families with small children. Even though it’s unorganized, it’s a perfect place for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Explore the underwater virgin nature, soak up the Cretan sun, and let the astonishing scenery bewitch you!
